Student Story

James Vanderpost has been Elizabeth Vandiver's voice instructor for several years. She had been singing in choir, and was interested in developing her natural abilities. She began to take vocal lessons from James as a freshman in high school. Soon she was extending her range, and with care and patience he helped her develop her voice.

At every session he required her to carefully and slowly warm up her vocal chords, helping her develop the singing habits that would strengthen her vocal instrument. He carefully selected Elizabeth's repertoire to include songs that improved her confidence and showcased her abilities. James speaks several languages which is useful in teaching the correct annunciation and vocal inflexion necessary to accurately interpret the music (as most classical pieces are in French, German or Italian). He showed her how to love the sound and the meaning of the words as well as the music.

Elizabeth continued to sing in choir throughout high school. When she began to apply to universities her voice talents were recognized, and she was offered scholarships. She has chosen to major in theater and minor in music.

Besides providing a wonderful and exciting path to successes in her life, Elizabeth's singing talent has improved her focus and helped her to achieve goals she would not have achieved otherwise.

Mr. Vanderpost has encouraged and helped Elizabeth to grow her singing abilities and take her talent to the next level. Regardless of where her life takes her, the poise and self-confidence Elizabeth learned at James' hand has been of great benefit to her. She looks forward to continued study with James during visits and holidays.
